The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas lives on the oldest reservation in the state, located in the Big Thicket of Deep East Texas. By 1780, the Alabama and Coushatta tribes migrated from Alabama to modern-day East Texas.
While the two tribes have different cultural identities, they have a closely intertwined history that reflects resilience and unity.
Our History in Texas
The pages of our history come alive as we delve into the pivotal role the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe played in the Texas War of Independence. In 1836, Sam Houston brokered a historic treaty with our tribe, uniting us with fellow Texans in the fight for independence.
During the war, the Coushatta's extraordinary support ensured the survival of the Texas Army, guiding them to crucial provisions as they fled Santa Anna.
Today, this selfless act is a testament to the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe's unwavering commitment to the Republic of Texas.
